Historic Centre: Northern area

Cathedral

Construction of the architectural complex of the Cathedral began in the XIII Century, and was later extended on numerous different occasions. The main façade has a large baroque front and to the left is the Miquelet, the symbol of Valencia , a large octagonal tower started in 1381 and completed in 1429. It is names after the main bell, which was baptised on the day of Saint Michael. The cathedral also has the door of the Palau , of Romanesque style, which is the oldest and the door of the Apostles, in front of which meets the Tribunal of the Waters. Thousands of years ago, this tribunal settled the problems arising between farmers regarding the distribution of irrigation waters in the area.
The interior is gothic, with three naves with crossing and apse with ambulatory. A chapel houses an agate chalice which is said to be the legendary Santo Grial. The chalice was brought to Huesca by San Lorenzo , who was martyred in that city. The cup was then stored in the monastery of San Juan de la Peña , until it was donated to Valencia by Alfonso V de Aragón.
The chapel of San Franc isc o de Borja preserves two paintings by Goya.

Basílica de los desamparados

The most pop ular church in Valencia , which houses the image of the city's patron, the Virgen de los Desamparados. The Virgin is on the high altar, decorated with flowers and candles. Inside the church, which is of Baroque style, one of its highlights is its dome painted al fresco by Antonio Palomino. During the Fallas, tribute is paid to the Virgin with a floral gift in the church's square.

Iglesia de San Salvador

A baroque church with a gothic bell tower from the XIII C., which houses an Ecce Homo painted by Divino Morales. Close by is the church of San Lorenzo , also baroque, with a churrigueresque altarpiece and decorated with tiles.

Jardines del Turia

In what was the bed of the river there are today 5 km. of gardens, sports facilities and children's parks, and is crossed by a dozen bridges. In a prominent spot, the Palau de la Música is to be found. The Botanical Garden has more than 7000 species of trees and bushes, many of them subtropical.

Museo de San Pío V

This old seminary houses an art gallery that includes over 2000 pieces of art from the old ages to the XIX C. It has famous Valencian paintings from the XIV and XV centuries, works by el Bosco, Murillo, Ribalta, van Dick, Juan de Juanes, Goya and Valencian artists of the XIX-XX centuries.

Torres de Serranos

The main old gate to the city. They were built by King Jaime I in 1238. 150 years later, the gothic towers beside them were added.

Barrio del Carmen

On old district of narrow streets around an old Carmelite monastery. The Church of Santa Cruz , of gothic style with a baroque front, has a tiled interior dating from the XVI C.

Museo de la Prehistoria

It has a collection of 5000 engravings and paintings of deer and horses in limestone which were d isc overed in the caves of Parpalló, near Gandia.

Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno - IVAM

One of the most visited museums in Spain and comprises two buildings. The Centro Julio Fernández has nine galleries, amongst them those dedicated to the Valencian artists Julio González and Ignacio Pinazo. In another nearby building, an old Carmelite convent, is the Centro del Carmen, which has different exhibitions of contemporary art.

Puerta de Quart

Another important gate built by Pere Bonfill in the mid-XV century. The walls still preserve the missiles launched by the French army during the siege of Valencia in 1808.

Iglesia de San Nicolás

Built during the XIV and XV Centuries on the ground of an old mosque and later reformed in baroque style. It contains paintings by Juan de Juanes, a crucifix from the XV C., French enamels from the XVI C. and canvases by Masip. In the nearvy Church of la Compañía, is a cloth of Juan de Juanes representing the Immaculate Conception.
