The seaside promenade ( paseo maritimo ) of Valencia was built during the 1990's, and completed the project of bringing Valencia city closer to the sea, an idea initiated in the XVIII century with the construction of the avenida del puerto.

Today, Valencia has completed this idea of bringing the city closer to the sea. We are no longer faced with the old city, whose centre was around the plaza del Ayuntamiento , and by means of the avenida del puerto , brought the coastal areas closer, specifically Grao and Cabañal .  Since 1980, with the nearing completion of the avenida Blasco Ibáñez , and from the moving of the railway lines underground, which now run under the boulevard Serrería , the city is on the verge of completing its project of getting closer to the sea. The construction of the avenues of Baleares and Francia has been recently completed, and now Valencia has three lathe avenues leading to the sea. The port railway bridge has just been inaugurated, the largest in Europe , which connects the two areas of the port by railway, with which the railway line that surrounds the port goes out, and the sea balcony project is completed.

The paseo marítimo , built in the 1990's, starts at the end of the left zone of the port, at the avenida de Neptuno , where the beach restaurants are located. This is a place to savour excellent rice, while enjoying the sun and contemplating the sea. Valencia beach measures 50 metres in width. The paseo marítimo goes from Valencia port to Alboraya.  It runs parallel to the Cabañal district, yet it is not part of the latter.

It is numerous kilometres in length, and the restaurants located there, are divided in two. The first ones, and the oldest, built at the beginning of the avenida de Neptuno , have excellent terraces looking over the beach. Some of them are small hotels. The second group, which go to the Malvarrosa estate, over a kilometre away, have been built within the new paseo marítimo , under licence, and were born with the paseo .  Their terraces are part of today´s paseo .

This paseo offers an enormous car park, due to the fact that Cabañal, the maritime district of Valencia, was a little far from the beach. Thus, when the paseo maritimo was built, there was more than enough space to build the paseo, a two-direction road with their corresponding parking areas, etc. without needing to alter the extremely wide and long beach.

During the summer months, there are plenty of terraces on the beach for night-time partying.
